Welcome to Year 1

Miss Crabtree and Miss Farley would like to welcome all of our new year 1 children back to school!

We hope you all had a great summer, a lovely rest and are ready for the new challenges Year 1 has to offer. We are really excited to get to know you all and we have lots of amazing and fun lessons planned for the curriculum.

Phonics

We are following the RWI scheme, which is having a fantastic impact on children’s progress. On top of their English lesson each day, they all take part in a full RWI lesson. Children are placed in small groups specific to their needs and ability, this allows them to apply their phonic skills on a daily basis and review sounds repeatedly every day. Children are also supported throughout the day and are given opportunities to take part in 1-1 phonic tutoring sessions, which enables them to work specifically on areas that they need to focus on.

Children are continually assessed during daily RWI lessons and so they are able to move on as soon as they are ready to do so. We also complete phonic assessments following the RWI format to track their progress and also prepare children for the end of year phonic screening. In order for children to feel confident when completing the phonic screening in July we complete regular screenings using past papers so they are familiar with layout and how the test is conducted.

We really appreciate your continued support as reading and practising phonics at home has a significant impact on your child’s progress. Ruth Miskin offers a variety of phonic videos online that you are able to watch at home:

English

In English we are following the RWI scheme alongside our narrative. We will continue to develop both our sound knowledge and blending skills in our Phonics lessons. Our narrative work will be focused around the book ‘The Story Machine’ as children will be exploring story’s with familiar settings. We will begin our half term by looking at labels, lists and captions. The children will also be exploring a selection of stories with familiar settings. They will be looking at the different characters and settings, before creating their own story.

Maths

During this half term we will be concentrating on basic skills and number. We will be focusing on the children being able to recognise, count, make amounts and write each number. We will spend several weeks focusing on a set of numbers for example 1-10 and will then move onto number bonds to 5 and 6. We will develop problem solving skills and incorporating shape, measure and time into our learning.

Science

During science this half term we will be looking at the human body and our five senses. They will explore body parts, identify their names and discuss what we use them for. They will also investigate their five senses and explore how they help us each day.

History

This half term children will be exploring old and new toys through the theme of Elliot’s toy box and attic. We will discuss how toys have changed over time, focusing on how they are made what they are made from and the impact technology has had on toys.

Computing

During computing this half term, the children will be developing their understanding of ‘Technology Around Us’. We will also be exploring the different parts of a computer and their uses.

D.T

Through our D.T topic this half term, we will be looking at Healthy Eating and will design, make and evaluate a fruit kebab. Children will explore and taste a variety of fruits. They will also look at health and safety when working with food and equipment.

Music

We will be using Charanga to enhance our music lessons and will be exploring the theme of ‘Hey You’ for our music lessons.

RE/PSHE

Our RE and PSHE topics will focus on ‘Our Wonderful World’ and we will follow the Jigsaw scheme of ‘Being me in my own world’.

We are looking forward to our first half-term together!

Some important information for Year 1 parents/carers:

  • Home Reader books will be given out every Friday and should be returned to school to be changed every Friday. Children should read daily at home.
  • We will be using school P.E kits this year so you do not need to send one to school with your child.
  • It is important that every child has a water bottle in school each day.
