Numeracy
We are currently teaching
numeracy at Leamington based on the new framework.
The main difference being that all areas are revisited
at least three times which is beneficial to the
children for reinforcement. More importantly certain
strands, which we know our children do find difficult,
ie word problems can be taught in every unit.
We have also recognised a need for basic skills
so as well as being taught within the numeracy
hour we have allocated slots through the week
whereby our children can improve recall of useful
number facts, timestables, time and 100 square
activities etc.
We attempt to make our lessons as mind friendly
as possible and by using as many visual, and practical
aids as possible then we hopefully engage more
children in quality learning.
For many children who find many aspects of numeracy
challenging, they have the opportunity to be part
of the RM maths project which gives 10/15 min
daily slots on a computer program. This program
recognises areas of strengths and weaknesses and
when teachers analyse this data we can use it
to inform our planning and hopefully bridge these
gaps which the children have.
